7th Grade Music Timeline

Music Timeline Requirements

7th Grade

 

You must create your timeline using the web-based program Tiki-Toki
You will be working on the mini laptops.  You may bring your own iPad or laptop in from home to work on.  If you choose to do this, your equipment is your responsibility.  It is also recommended to bring in ear buds from home for listening.

  • Choose one composer from each musical time period listed below (4 composers total):

  • Research each composer.  Your timeline must include the following information:

    • Birth and death date for each composer

    • Two compositions from each composer. Place each composition on the timeline the day or year it was composed (if only the year is specified, put it on January 1st of that year). For each composition include the following:

      • On the title of the event: Composer’s name and composition title

(example: “Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”)

  • A picture representing the piece

(sheet music, clip art or composer’s picture)

  • Identify the musical time period in which the composition was written

(Renaissance, Baroque, Classical or Romantic)

  • Tempo of the composition

(In the event information box)

  • A minimum of 2 Instruments and/or vocal parts included in the composition
    (In the event information box)

    • A Musical Example from 1 of your chosen artists
      Find a YouTube video to play in the background while you are presenting your timeline to the class

    • Citations
      You must have citations for ALL websites you have used!  
      List your citations in a separate box at the very end of your timeline.
      You can simply list the website URLs that you used but they must be the exact URL.

  • Be sure to check for correct spelling and grammar!

  • Be ready to present your timeline to the class!  When presenting, play your music clip in the background while you walk us through each box on your timeline, show us the pictures, and tell us the information.

  • Choose a genre from the list below:
    -Rock ‘n’ Roll
    -Blues
    -Jazz
    -Musical Theatre (research the writers/composers, not titles of shows)
    -Reggae
    -Heavy Metal
    -R&B (Rhythm & Blues)
    -Motown
    -Bluegrass
    -Techno/Electronic
    -Ska
    -Disco
    -Ragtime
    -Folk
    -Celtic

  • Research that genre.  Your timeline must include the following information:

    • Starting and ending years for the genre

    • 5 important artists who were active within this genre
      -Include a picture for each, name the group member(s), and the place they formed
      -Place them on the timeline at the year they formed/emerged

    • 3 songs per artist
      -Place each song on the timeline at the year it was released
      -Include a picture for each song (Album cover)
      -List at least 3 instruments used in each song (you will have to listen to the songs to figure this out!)


    • 1 Paragraph (minimum 4 sentences) in a separate box at the end of your timeline describing the defining characteristics of your chosen genre.  These could be:
      -Instruments Used
      -Tempo
      -Mood
      -Typical rhythmic patterns


    • A Musical Example from 1 of your chosen artists
      Find a YouTube video to play in the background while you are presenting your timeline to the class

    • Citations
      You must have citations for ALL websites you have used!

  • Your presentation must include the following:

    • 10 slides

    • 20 Facts

    • 5 Pictures

    • Musical Example

    • Works Cited (additional slide)

 

  • Your slides must contain COMPLETE SENTENCES and include correct spelling and grammar.

 

  • You must have a minimum of 3 sources.

 

  • Make your presentation creative including transitions, pictures and clipart. You will be graded on creativity!
